Time Required
The length of time required for the procedure is dependent upon several factors, such as:
- Your overall dental health
- Which teeth are being replaced
- The number of teeth being removed/replaced
- Whether or not teeth need to be removed prior to the placement of the implants
All of these factors will contribute to the overall time required for the entire process. Once you are physically in the chair and ready to receive your implant, the surgery can last up to two hours for a single tooth. This doesn’t include the time spent preparing you for surgery or the time allowed for the anesthesia to take effect.
Pre-Surgery Prep
As with any surgical procedure, you will need to take steps to prepare beforehand. Not everyone’s pre-surgery prep will be the same and your dentist will have a plan tailored especially for you, but here are a few examples of what you may need to do prior to your dental implant surgery:
- You may be prescribed antibiotics to take in the days leading up to the surgery.
- Eat well in the days prior, especially if you know you are going to be sedated. Patients who will be under I.V. sedation will need to fast before the surgery, and you don’t want to be starving the entire day. It is also important to have nutrients in your system to keep up your strength.
- Arrange for transportation! If you will be sedated during your procedure, you won’t be able to drive afterward. Make sure to get plenty of rest, as well.
After Surgery
As with any type of surgery, it’s important to fully understand how to best take care of your mouth after dental implants. Here are a few things to keep in mind.
- Bleeding: It is normal for there to be some bleeding around the surgical site. This may last between two and three days after your appointment. Directly after the surgery, your dentist will place gauze on the site, it’s important to continue biting down on the gauze for a few hours.
- Eating: For 24 hours after the surgery, you should only be eating foods that are soft. You should avoid hot foods and drinks for a few hours, and do not drink from a straw for 24 hours.
- Pain: The amount of pain that you feel will depend on the type of surgery you had. If you are in pain, over the counter pain medication should be enough, but talk with your dentist if it continues.
- Swelling: Swelling is also common after dental implants, especially if bone grafting was involved. Swelling and some bruising may last between three and four days. You can minimize the amount of swelling by using an ice pack.
