Root Canal Surgery
Of all the dental implant procedures, a root canal may sound the scariest and painful. However, many patients report that the procedure feels similar to having a cavity filled. When you visit M Dental in Mississauga, our dentists and staff will do our best to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible through each step of the procedure.
What is a Root Canal?
Root canal procedures are typically done when there is deep decay in the tooth. When the pulp of the inner tooth is inflamed or infected, it can cause a lot of pain.
- Before the procedure begins, your dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic.
- The dentist will then make a small opening in the crown of the tooth so that all of the decayed pulp can be removed.
- You may need to have additional x-rays done throughout the procedure to catch any remaining decay.
- The hole in your tooth is then filled with a rubber-like material and the hole will be closed with a temporary filling. This filling will protect the tooth while you’re waiting for a permanent crown.
- The final step of the procedure is to have the permanent crown place on top of the tooth. Depending on the condition of your tooth, the dentist may need to place a supporting post inside the tooth, where the roots of the tooth are located.
After the procedure, the area may feel sensitive and there may also be some pain, especially if the tooth was hurting before the root canal was done. Until the permanent crown is placed on the tooth, it is recommended that you avoid chewing on that side of your mouth. Your dentist will have more post care steps to follow, so be sure to ask any questions that you may have.
