How to Choose a Toothbrush and Floss

The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing at least once a day, but have you taken a look recently at the toothbrush and floss that you’re using? It can be overwhelming looking at the variety of options in the store — soft bristles, medium, firm, unwaxed, waxed, round, flat — how do you choose?

At M Dental, we provide exceptional care and service, whether you need a dental cleaning or something more serious like a root canal. To help you take the best care of your teeth, here are some things to look for when shopping for a new toothbrush or container of floss.

How to Choose a Toothbrush

  • Soft Bristles: There are various options when it comes to the firmness of the bristles, but firm or even medium firm bristles can cause damage to the gum tissue.
  • Toothbrush Head: The head of the toothbrush should be between one-half inch wide to one inch long. The brush should be able to reach one to two teeth at a time.
  • Powered vs. Regular: Both powered and the standard manual toothbrushes are equally effective at cleaning teeth and removing food stuck in between teeth. If you are more comfortable with electric toothbrushes, then they are worth it.

How to Choose Floss

When it comes to shopping for floss, it really comes down to personal preference and possibly the situation. Here are some types you will find in the store:

  • Unwaxed Floss: Thin strands of nylon, but they can shred or break easily.
  • Waxed Floss: The typical floss, but with a thin coating of wax making it easier to slide in between the teeth.
  • Mint Floss in Different Styles: These come in handy if you want to freshen your breath at the same time.
  • Dental Tape: Broad and flat thread that comes in waxed and unwaxed versions.
  • Disposable Flossers: These are convenient and a good option for young children who are still learning how to hold a strand of floss.
  • Water Flosser: A popular brand is Waterpik that shoots a stream of water that gently cleans around the gums and in between teeth.

Whatever toothbrush or flossing method you choose, the important thing is that you are brushing and flossing regularly! If you want to avoid awkward conversations with your dentist about gum health, this is the way to do it!
